To me Autumn signals the start of the ‘cosy months’ which come after ‘sweltering months’ and before the ‘freezing months’. Mid september through to Mid December is probably my favourite time of year. Not so cold out that you need so many layers that walking is difficult, but warm enough for a cosy cardi and a scarf at least! Higgidy Pies tasked me with sharing some autumnal snaps, and I was happy to oblige! Its been fun taking photos out and about as the trees turn slowly from green, to red then onto brown and leave large piles just waiting to be kicked or jumped in.

Hearty food like pies and stews start to feature heavily in our weekly meal plan and a warm apple or rhubarb pie with lashings of custard appear after dinner too! Although I prefer my custard cold actually… Autumn means I can treat myself to a bottle of gingerbread syrup and a bag of marshmallows to add to hot chocolates. It also means I can paint my nails navy and burgundy too!

I see Autumn differently now I have children, well all seasons really but Autumn is the most tactile. The leaves are there just waiting to be jumped in, big fat shiny conkers and other nutty things fall from trees for little hands to explore, squirrels to chase and even the scent in the air is different too and before long we’ll be smelling bonfires. Lets not forget about Bonfire Night and all the fireworks too! Oh, and candles and oil burners are now an every day essential!

But after an afternoon trekking through the park or the woods, or an evening watching the fireworks there really is nothing better than coming home, collapsing on the sofa in your PJs with the whole family and eating till you’re fit to burst!

That pie right there is the new Steak Ragu pie to be precise and it was delicious! crispy topping with a succulent steak and red wine filling, served with Sam’s signature ‘skin on’ (aka too lazy to peel) sweet potato mash and even arlo had a good chew on some pie crust! Higgidy is a company just up the road from me, and are launching Sofa Supper Clubs, the first is in London on 30th October at Ice Tank, 5-7 Grape St, then in Brighton on 5th November at Caribou Rooms, 51 Brunswick Street East, Hove. They’re free but you need to book and places are obviously limited www.higgidy.co.uk/sofasuppers, also Chris & Stephen from Gogglebox will be there, what’s not to love about sharing a sofa with those two characters!

Higgidy sent us some pies to enjoy to celebrate the start of Autumn, all words and opinions are my own.
