A couple of weeks ago Donna (my new favourite twitter pal)  who blogs at Red head & Baby led tagged me in the ‘fictional world meme, so I here’s my answers. I tag everyone, and you should all go and read the other posts people have added to the link-up, just click the button at the end of the post for the full list! Also, if you are on goodreads I’d love to be ‘friends’ with some more people as it’s where I find most of ‘want to read books! You can click my name in the doobrey below.

What were your favourite reads from your childhood?

The Babysitters Club books (I always skipped the chapter where she introduced the characters, seriously, WHY in every book!?) and also The Saddle Club books. Before these became major parts of my life I was reading Enid Blyton books mostly, along with The Wizard of Oz series.

There are always those books that defined your teen reads and stay with you – what were yours?

Junk (by Melvyn Burgess) was one that really hit me. I have read it many times since and it always reminds me how lucky I was to have a happy home but also so intrigued about that world. The first book that opened my eyes to the horror of war was The diary of Anne Frank, another book I have read countless times. When I visited her house in Amsterdam I needed some time to myself when we left so I could reflect and digest what I had just experienced.

Who are your favourite authors currently?

Kate Atkinson & Kate Morton. I also read everything that Jodi Picoult writes but am enjoying her books less and less recently, which is a shame!

Which 3 genres do you gravitate towards most often?

Thrillers for quick reads, Family history (not historical fiction, per se) & Contemporary (funny if possible!)

Can you choose your top titles from each of those genres?

These are not necessarily my top, but the top of what I have read recently……

The Leopard – Jo Nesbo / The Secret keeper – Kate Morton / The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion

And your least favourite genres?

I will read absolutely anything and always have a book on the go in the bathroom for toilet visits when I don’t have a baby scrabbling round my ankles, plus I read in the bath too. However I very rarely CHOOSE to read romance or chick lit.

Of the many, many fictional and fantastical worlds, where would you most like to visit?

Hmmm, after finishing ‘Just one damn thing after another’ (Jodi Taylor, the title makes it sound awful but in fact it was good!) where they are historians who travel back in time to find out how/why things really happened, I’d like to go to St Marys so I can time travel too! I need to read the next two books.

Everyone loves a villain, right?! Who would make your favourites list?

Anyone of the villain’s from Scandinavian Literature (think Nesbo & Larsson books). Oh, and Voldemort.

Share the books that have had you sobbing?

I very VERY rarely cry (not just at books, in life too. I shed 2 tears when I had the baby, and that was only because she was a girl and everyone thought she would be a boy) I know a couple of Jodi Picoult books made me get a lump in my throat at points, but actual tears i’m not sure!

And let’s end on a high! Which books leave a smile on your face, and maybe elicit a few laughs?!

Anything by Bill Bryson has a few laugh-out-loud bits, as do Sue Townsend books (she wrote the Adrian Mole series, and The Queen and I amongst others)

  1. I love Jo Nesbo! Great tag, I love reading anything grizzly/murderous, hate any forms of chic lit *shudder* haha xxx

  2. Some great books there, and some that I now to read! I do like the sound of that Jodi Taylor book, so I’ll need to get my hands on a copy of that, thank you. And thanks for joining in and sharing in #MyFictionalWorld x
