I quit my job. Today I handed in my notice to the company I have worked with for over 15 years, and it felt GOOD! I’m going to be blogging/freelancing for a living now and I couldn’t be happier! I was doing one management shift a week and then helping out on the odd shift when needed, to cover holidays or sickness at a hotel. I started with the company as a bar maid at 18 and then worked my way up through pub management, moving to a hotel and managing the kitchen and working my way up to be the hotel manager from there.

I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to decide to quit the hotel job and go it alone, as I’ve been making a good amount of money over the last few years through blogging and freelancing (I do social media management and some copy writing) but for some reason I just couldn’t break the tie. I think in my mind I needed to keep the connection in case for some reason I ended up wanting to go back into hotel management full time, which realistically I am so unlikely to want to do. It is such a hard job to juggle around kids at the best of times, and as Sam does the same job but in a different hotel in a different town it was becoming even harder to manage, and that was just with me doing one shift a week!

Leaving the hotel trade will mean I won’t get my weekly ‘chat to real people’ time, or the nice half an hour each way stroll to and from which was great for catching up with podcasts and just de-stressing in general. But it will mean that I don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn to leave the house at 6.15, and that there won’t be a mad rush where Sam collects Athena from preschool, chucks her in the car with Arlo and drives to get me, then we all walk home whilst he drives off to start his shift. It means we’ll either get to have breakfast or dinner as a family one more time a week, in an already hectic schedule.

I’m really looking forward to a new start, continuing my freelancing and also starting a training course leading to a Diploma in proofreading hopefully, I just want to add another string to my bow really and it will mean I have more scope to find work and give me a bit of variation.

So now my next step is to make a new website for my freelancing, start the course and get on with it! I also want to buy myself a new charm for my charm bracelet to commemorate leaving my job, but I can’t decide what, any ideas?

  1. Well done for following what you love (and what you’re good at!) – I can imagine it’s a huge step to leave somewhere you’ve been for over a decade.

Although you won’t get that separate time away, you’ll gain so much more independence and control over your hours. Plus, more family time!

Sounds like a win win situation to me.

  2. There is a little text book charm, could be appropriate, new course and a new career in reading?

Good luck, hope your new venture works out but at the very least you have lots of experience to fall back on, that I’m sure you won’t need.

  3. Yay for going self employed, it’s scary but totally worth it. We went full time with our photo company 2 years ago and it was the best decision we ever made!! Good luck!

  4. Congrats for following your heart, 🙂 At least, life is at a much slower and more peaceful pace. Good luck on your new job and have fun with the time that you now have with your kiddo. I wish you all the best! 🙂
