In which I need your help!

So I bought a wedding dress. It was kind of an impulse buy. It was 20% off, but it was still £150 over my very minimal budget for a dress. The dress is lovely, and bar having to lose my rather rounded belly in 6 months I like it. BUT (always a but!) I cant decide if I should keep it or not.  I can return it within 28 days of last week…

The issue is this. The dress is long and slim fitting, with a medium ish train. This is great for walking in a straight line down the church aisle yes, for dancing not so much. It cant be hooked up to form a bustle kind of thing, because it would look bloody weird. I COULD sew a ribbon loop in it and hook it on my wrist, but this would mean that everyone will be able to see at least half my thigh and all my leg whilst I am dancing, especially with Sam as he is bloody tall and I am not, so my arm will be above my head if it is resting romantically (HAHAHA) on his shoulder during my first dance. Or he will trample all over it, or I will, or we both will and end up in a heap on the floor halfway through our first dance.

for imagerys sake the dress is a little like this: (not showing you the real one in case I keep it)

[not my dress, just similar bottom bit/train length]

So, these are my options:

a) keep the dress and purchase a shorter CHEAPER dress to change into for dancing, sending me realistically at least £250 over budget…

b) return the dress and buy one within my budget that I can dance in… (but I haven’t seen anything I like as much as this one!)

c) keep the dress and hope for the best and sew a ribbon wrist loop in… and risk falling over

What train did your dress have, did you fall arse over tit during your first dance?

TELL ME WHAT TO DO, I IMPLORE YOU!

  1. Ribbon wrist loop! Are you really in love with the dress? You should keep it if you feel its really ‘The One’. Could you not wear some kind of white-ish skirt/petticoat under the dress to combat the thigh-revealing problem?

  2. I had a dress pretty similar to this and mine tied in a bustle for the night. It actually looked much better than I expected. The woman at the shop talked me into it and adjusted the height of it twice to get it just right. There might be a picture of it like that on my blog. I’m not sure. X

  3. I say keep it and do your best to not fall! I say this becasue if you take it back and then you cant find another you like as much you will be upset – yes?!
    XXX

  4. I say keep it too!! It sounds so beautiful! I think a ribbon wrist loop sounds like a plan, and, as Lucy suggests, maybe have something underneath? xxx

  5. My best friend, who planned her wedding for 20 months and really went for the whole shebang, bought her dress in the sale for £400 and carried it home in a binbag after deciding that a) she was utterly fed up of looking and b) would rather spend the extra £800 she would have to have spent getting something similar, fractionally more perfect, full price, on booze. She looked utterly amazing and had a fantastic day. Honestly I think by the time you get there you won’t be thinking about the train, you’ll be thinking about getting married! If you really love it and want to wear it (and would be happy not to have to look any more) then bugger it, stick with this one. Tell Sam he’ll be getting none on the honeymoon if he falls over it. Job done.

  6. I think you should leave it back and check on internet and other stores,I´m sure you´ll find cheaper ones 😀

and I like your blog,I´m your newest follower!

  7. I think you should keep it and hope for the best! I’m sure it’ll all work out fine 🙂 xx

  8. My personal experience was with a massive train (so not what I thought I would end up with) – I had the lady who did my alterations fit it so it could be tied up into a bustle, but come the wedding day, no one had the foggiest how to actually do it! Proper nightmare for about 5 minutes, but then I just grabbed a fistful of dress, slung it over one arm and carried on partying! I let it down for our first dance and Hubby didn’t fall over it once (my Dad did stand on it on our way down ‘the aisle’ though, argh!). If you really love the dress, I wouldn’t let it hold you back. But if you’re not 100%, maybe you should keep looking. Hope this helps xxx

  9. I think if you love it you should keep it and splurge on the extra dress for dancing. It is your day after all! It’ll be better if you are as comfy as possible for the entire celebration!! 🙂 xxxx

  10. KEEP this one for definite, then buy a cheeky vintage second hand number for evening dancing! xoxoxoox

  11. I got married at the weekend in a totally impractical dress for dancing! I bought a cheap, white evening dress from ASOS but didn’t wear it in the end as i figured I’d spent so much on a ‘proper’ dress and it’s the only time I’ll get to wear it, etc etc etc. I had a bustle on my dress which broke half way through the night and ended up, like Rosie B, just grabbing my train and carrying it around with me. In hindsight, I wish I’d also got a loop to put around my wrist and, like you, it would’ve probably meant flashing but would be nice to have the option. Wouldn’t have changed my dress though. xx That probably doesn’t help. Sorry!

  12. Thank you EVERYONE who tweeted and commented, I have FINALLY decided (for now, ha!) to keep this dress because I genuinely am in love with it. I have not yet decided on another dress, and will see if my mum can sort out some kind of ribbon down the middle of the lining to kind of ruche (how do spell ruche?) it up for dancing, so if that works then no second dress needed! ta dah!
