What the kids read in March

IMG_6840It’s so nice for Athena and I to get some time together if I can persuade Arlo nap somewhere other than on my lap, and when we do it’s a really good opportunity for us to read ‘nice books’ which are ones that we don’t want Arlo to get grabby and pully with! Athena now recognises the pleasure of a good book, and treats her books really well. This last month we’ve been reading three books quite a lot, The Sky Guys (Madeleine Rogers), Ah-Choo! and Teeny Tiny Toady.

Teeny Tiny Toady (by Jill Esbaum) is a lovely tale of a family of toads trying to extricate their mum from a bucket… teeny tiny toady has to save the day though! The illustrations (by Keika Yamaguchi) are just gorgeous, very classic in style. The story is written in rhyme but there are also lots of ‘doing’ words; which Athena loves to repeat so it’s great for her vocabulary too!

Ah-Choo! By Lana Wayne Koehler & Gloria G. Adams is a really sweet book about a boy who wants to find a pet that his sister isn’t allergic to! It not only teaches about types of animals but also the alphabet, as he brings home an animal from A-Z before he finally finds one that she won’t sneeze at! Lovely bold illustrations and lots of things to point out on each page, this is fast becoming a firm favourite bedtime story too!

IMG_7171The Sky Guys (Madeleine Rogers) is another book from one of our favourites, Mibo. They have an online shop selling all sorts, from these books (we reviewed The Jungle Crew here) kids clothes to funky tile tattoos! The Sky Guys focuses on five types of birds, and is a great introduction to each type for children between 4 and 7. Athena is a little younger than this but still enjoys the book, and it’s a great way to get her to differentiate between the species of bird. There is a flap on the back cover inside the book, with pull out scenes and birds to make to enhance the learning experience but as yet I think she’s a little too young to make these neatly, plus the baby would get hold of them in a jiffy but I think in a year or so they will be perfect!
