The famous city of Sheffield is located in the county of South Yorkshire. Sheffield has so many attractions that it is difficult to arrange them in order of priority. Of course, we all know that this city has one of the largest universities in the UK (University of Sheffield) – among the top hundred of the best in the world and the top ten in the UK according to the Telegraph. And it also shows the best quality of life for students according to the Independent. However, our purpose is to show different cultural sights of the city instead of the well-known educational details like the most affordable student accommodation Sheffield and so on.
Sheffield is a city with a long history and rich culture. Various places of interest, attractions and cultural sites attract people from all over the world. Sheffield became famous for unique exhibits of the Museum of Fine Arts, City Museum of Antiquities, and the town hall. City Art Gallery, Museum of the Philosophical Society and Industrial Museums are of special interest as well.
Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is a museum in a village where you can watch the process of steel production and its purification, see a collection of machines used in agriculture.
As a cultural object, you can visit the city’s Millennium Gallery, which is divided into 4 sections: the exposition of the Tate and the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Gallery of Crafts and Design, Gallery of metal structures and the famous Ruskin’s collection of art. The Millennium Gallery is connected with the Winter Gardens.
The museum in the city centre is called Weston Park. It is the largest museum in Sheffield and has been around since 1875. The building is fully restored after it was destroyed in the early 1930’s. This museum houses 7 galleries on various subjects. You can learn about the history of the city and admire the collection of archaeological finds, arts and crafts.
Shepherd Wheel Museum is housed in the former grinding block at the south-west of the city. As you might guess from the name, you can admire the water wheels there. The main five-metre wheel is still functioning up to this day. On the whole, this water construction refers to the historical monuments of architecture. The watermill has been functioning on the site since the late 16th century. The museum will show you the water wheel and threshing mechanism, as well as other agricultural equipment and tools. This museum was opened in 2012.
