As the summer comes to an end we start to reflect on what may or may not have been a summer of success. Perhaps you may have had an amazing holiday abroad and are starting to feel the ‘back to work blues’, or you may have stayed at home in anticipation of a great British summertime and feel slightly let down. Rather than ponder on what might have been, why not seize what time is left and do 7 things that will not only be memorable, but give you that essential happiness boost you need!
1. Enrol on that course you have always wanted to do
Some of your friends may think it’s silly and it may not be the cheapest choice right now, but you never know what’s round the corner. Learning a new skill could come in handy and if you really enjoy it then signing up should be a no brainer.
2. Arrange to visit 3 people you haven’t seen in years
Weekends in the summer are usually filled with barbeques and trips to the seaside. This year you might have found that you have had more free weekends, meaning that you don’t have an excuse not to see those friends you were ‘too busy’ to meet up with. Take a trip to see a friend that lives in a fascinating town that you have not been to before and plan a weekend of exciting activities. You will feel better for making the time to see old friends and they will appreciate your visit.
3. Shop in the end of summer sales
There are so many bargains out there at the moment! This means that you can treat yourself for less. Most shop windows currently contain a ‘summer sale’ sign and a selection of brightly coloured clothes. You can also do a bit of online shopping; there are lots of discount codes and vouchers for your favourite brands on sites such as Topcashback.
4. Eat at an international restaurant
There is always the option of going to your favourite restaurant chain where you know what to expect. Why not try something different this summer and sample some international delights in a slightly more unusual restaurant. Ignite your taste buds with some Vietnamese food or tuck into some tasty Greek dishes.
5. Sign up for a new gym class
There is probably a gym class you have always wanted to try but never had the courage to put your name on the list. Exercise releases endorphins, which are the body’s natural feel good chemicals. If you look around online you will find lots of health and fitness vouchers and discounts for a wide range of classes and gyms.
6. Treat yourself to a spa day
Spa treatments are proven to lift your mood and give you that body-positive feeling. There are packages where entrance to the spa, lunch and a treatment are all included so make sure you shop around to find the best deal. It is definitely worth booking a massage or a facial if you want to de-stress and totally relax.
7. Find alternative sources of Vitamin D
If you don’t think you have managed to get your natural dose of Vitamin D from the sun this summer, try including it in the food you eat. Vitamin D is vital for bone and muscle health. The following foods are a good source of Vitamin D:
· Oily fish, such as salmon and sardines · Eggs · Fortified fat spreads · Fortified breakfast cereals · Powdered milk
With your new skills in hand, a totally relaxed mind and some extra money in your pocket (for Christmas!) the end of summer 2012 still has the prospect of serving some unforgettable memories. Of course, I have the wedding to look forward to, and then the future as a Mrs, but i’ve still got a good few ‘treats’ to look forward to before November!
