Travel: The best winter destinations for kids

Seeking some winter sunshine?

With the UK seeing its first cold snap of the year, escaping to warmer climes could be the best way to extend the summer. Getting away during the summer holidays can feel tricky, especially when you’re trying to beat the crowds and sky-high seasonal prices!

Waiting for the autumn or winter months means better deals on beautiful beach holidays – and plenty of warm sunshine left to enjoy too. Whether you fancy sunbathing all day or surfing some waves, here are five of the best winter destinations for the youngest members of the family.

Lanzarote, Canary Islands

The Canary Islands make a stylish choice, but Lanzarote is by far the most compelling. Beautiful blue skies and crystalline waters strike a contrast with the mesmerising black sands that characterise the landscape.

Volcanic scenery doesn’t get much more impressive than that on Lanzarote, but the attraction doesn’t end there. Family-friendly attractions are plentiful, with hotels offering children’s shows, water parks, and kids’ clubs offering nearly every activity you could imagine.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Dubai is known for its cosmopolitan status, but this high-end destination is more family-friendly than you might expect. If you’re seeking a flawless combination of luxury, adventure and iconic landmarks, choose Dubai. During our winter, this destination is pleasantly warm and sunny.

Within the city itself, you’ll find world-class shopping in the Dubai Mall, home to an immersive aquarium and more than a thousand retail stores. If you’d rather take a day trip, you could head to the desert for thrilling off-road adventures or Arabian horse riding.

Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt

Egypt guarantees warm, sunny weather even through the British winter. With spectacular historical sites and underwater wonders, Sharm El-Sheikh makes the perfect base for relaxing family holidays.

From the Heavenly Cathedral to the mysterious Ras Mohamed Nature Reserve, a national park offering diving, hiking and much more, Egypt’s ancient landscape is fascinating for adults and children alike. With beautiful sandy beaches on offer too, Sharm El-Sheikh promises memorable winter sun holidays for the whole family

Tenerife, Canary Islands

Throughout winter, average temperatures in Tenerife fall around 20 degrees Celsius. With pleasant sunshine and beautiful coastal vistas, this island makes another sterling example of the versatile nature of the Canaries.

You’ll have plenty of family-friendly activities to choose from. Whether that’s whale watching on the Costa Adeje or going wild at the Siam Park water park, it’s easy to keep the children entertained. If you’d like to try something new as a family, why not go snorkelling to see which sea creatures you discover hiding in the reef?

  • Costa Rica

Finally, while Costa Rica is perhaps better known for hiking and serious adventure, its rich diversity makes it perfectly suited to families too. From white-water rafting to adrenaline-boosting zip-lining and trekking at altitude, it’s a brilliant choice for families with teenagers looking to push the boat out.

Booking a multi-generational holiday to Costa Rica means you could explore dense rainforests, book a family surfing lesson, or hike through protected nature reserves for close-up encounters.
