Most advice I can find advises that you change your mattress every 7 to 8 years. Our mattress was almost as old as our first-born, who turned 11 earlier this year… it had a few springs poking out of the sides, the handles for turning it had broken and the little buttons on the quilted top had started to come un-stitched and moved around, digging into your hips as you slept. We’d got our daughter a padded mattress topper form Simba earlier this year to up the comfort levels of her mattress and were impressed so decided we’d try the Hybrid Original Mattress from Simba for ourselves as we were long overdue a replacement.
First Impressions
The mattress arrived rolled up in a compact box, which made moving it surprisingly easy for a king-size! It expanded fast, and as we unpacked it in the morning it was ready to sleep on that night. It gradually got deeper as the day went on, although the slightly annoying foamy smell was still there at bedtime once we had a sheet and pillows on it was less noticeable, and had gone after two days. The (removeable! washable!) mattress cover feels soft and breathable, and the mattress itself feels fairly firm (definitely comparable to the Hypnos one that we’ve just retired) with a super soft top layer. A bit like sleeping on a cloud.
Comfort and Sleep Quality
The Simba Hybrid is made of five layers, mixing memory foam and springs and comes in the ‘medium firm’ as standard but it turned out to have the perfect “medium-firm” feel. I sleep on my side, I’ve really appreciated how well it relieves pressure. There are nine support zones within the foam base, so wider areas such as the hips and shoulders are always supported.
It also does a fantastic job at absorbing motion when there are two people sharing a bed. My husband weighs twice what I do and when he gets into bed once I’m asleep, or one of us gets up during the night we’re not disturbing the other, this is a game-changer for uninterrupted sleep. We also don’t notice the cat arriving in the middle of the night and turning 5 circles before he settles down to sleep! The mattress doesn’t sag at the edges, despite there being no ridge/frame inside like with traditional mattresses and with a ten year guarantee.
We’re both genuinely sleeping better on the new Simba mattress and I’d happily recommend it to anyone looking to ensure they (both!) get a good night’s sleep. What’s more, it’s made in the UK, from UK suppliers for the most part, which is something we love to see! As well as mattresses you can find pillows, duvets, weighted blankets and even slippers available from Simba! Plus they offer a mattress collection service too – no need to lug your old one to the tip!
