Merton Hotel Jersey, Channel Islands Review

Merton Hotel Jersey review

During our trip to Jersey, we stayed at the Merton Hotel [accommodation in exchange for this review], which took under ten minutes to drive to from the ferry port. It’s a large hotel with plenty of things on offer for guests. In fact it’s more like a resort than a hotel, including the aquadome located just over the road which we had a great view of from our room!

An indoor pool that you can swim through to the outdoor pool, with a flume, water jets, lazy river, sauna, steam and spa pools. This is included completely free of charge for hotel guests which was a lovely surprise! There are two outdoor kids play areas, one at the leisure pool and one in the hotel grounds, as well as ‘Kids Zone’ that we never even found time to explore, and a kids club between 6.30 and 8.30pm which is free of charge, so you could eat in peace whilst your kids are looked after! In the evenings there is entertainment in the star room, though our kids were far too tired to stay up for this, in fact they fell asleep as soon as their heads hit the pillows in their bunk beds each night as we packed so much into our days!

Our room was large but not particularly modern looking. It was very clean though, and all the linen and towels were spotless and fresh, and the mattresses and pillows really comfortable. The kids had bunk beds with a little shelf and night light each, which meant that there was plenty of floor space. Two small arm chairs and a table meant that we had space to spread out, as well as a desk area for me to do my makeup and sort out my bag each day. There was a tea and coffee station in the room, with herbal tea on offer as well as breakfast tea which I thought was a lovely touch.

There was more than enough storage in our room at the Merton hotel, even if we had been staying for a week! Each bedside table had a drawer, there were drawers in the desk and then a separate chest of drawers beneath the flat screen TV. Then we also had a double wardrobe with plenty of hanging space and shelving units down one side. A fan and iron were stored in here too, should we need them. There was no air conditioning but we opened the windows during the night for some fresh air and to cool the room.

There was also a distinct lack of plug sockets, just two at the desk and one which the TV was plugged into – which we unplugged overnight to use. Sockets next to the bed would have been very welcome, and hopefully these are included when the rooms are next refurbished, or some USB sockets added to the existing ones.

The bathroom was small but had a bath with a shower over it, which had a detachable shower head which was great for when you want to wash your hair without having a proper shower. There was a shower cap and individually wrapped soap next to the basin, which seems a little old fashioned considering there was a shower gel dispenser over the bath – but the bathroom had plenty of space for all our lotions and potions, and a heated towel rail which was very useful for drying our wet swimming costumes on after a swim.

The public areas of the hotel are more modern than our room, with lots of lounge areas with comfy chairs, a bar for drinks and a really light and spacious atrium area – perfect for relaxing in. There is also an area outdoor with a surprise Gorilla statue – he is to commemorate Jambo the gorilla who stood watch over a little boy who fell into his enclosure at Jersey Zoo in the eighties to stop him from coming to harm!

Breakfast was a buffet in the large dining room at the Merton hotel, and there was plenty on offer. Served between 7.30 and 10 Belvedere, you’re brought tea coffee or hot chocolate to the table and help yourself to food. There was a traditional cooked breakfast on offer, as well as a full continental offering. Fruit, cereal, yogurts, cheese, sliced meats as well as many types of bread and pastries. It was a great way to start the day, and we all had something different on each of our three mornings!

We also ate in the Belvedere restaurant one evening, again it was buffet style but had plenty on offer, and you could have more than one helping if you felt like it. We had three courses, including some lovely puddings. I had the carvery option and Sam went for seafood, which was fresh and hopefully locally caught. There were two other restaurants on site, Bonettis serving Italian food and Jersey Joe’s, a traditional American diner although we didn’t dine in them.

You can find out more about the Merton hotel, as well as the self-catering suites next door which look lovely on their website.
