4 tips for a healthier summer

If you have decided to adopt a healthier lifestyle, there is so much more to think about, other than what you look like on the outside. Health and fitness starts from within and is a combination of a healthy body and mind. Many people have lost the connection between mind and body and it’s time to rediscover the balance. Reconnecting your mind and body will mean that any healthy lifestyle changes you make, are likely to become a long term habit, rather than a short term fix.

Here are some more tips to help you develop a healthy mindset in order to meet your fitness goals.

Get plenty of sleep

When we sleep our bodies take the opportunity to regenerate. Sleep gives our bodies time to recover from the stresses and strains of daily life and also sort through thought processes. Getting too much or too little sleep can affect our health enormously. A lack of sleep can affect concentration, cause an impaired immune system, reduced motor skills and it can even cause depression and affect cardiovascular health.

Try to develop a good sleep routine by ensuring your bedroom is cosy, comfortable and calming. Make sure your mattress is fit for purpose, a good quality mattress only has a lifespan of around 9 years, so if yours is old take a look at the range of Silentnight Mattresses available.

Avoid all technology in the bedroom. Don’t be tempted to install a TV set and keep laptops and mobile phones well out of the way. Screens cause stimulation of our brains, which is the opposite to the relaxing state you want to create. It is important to avoid caffeine too, as this is also a stimulant.

Eat a healthy diet

If you are trying to become more healthy the old saying “you are what you eat” is never more true! If you eat a diet which is poor in nutrients and high in fats and sugar you are likely to feel lethargic and low in energy and mood. Eating a range of healthy foods will ensure that you consume a diet rich in minerals and nutrients and you will feel healthier with more energy.

Get a health check up

Before you embark on a fitness routine it is important that you get a health check up from your doctor, especially if you suffer from any chronic conditions which may affect your ability to exercise. Once you have a clean bill of health you will be able to proceed with exercising gently at first.

Exercise

To achieve optimal health it is important to combine a healthy diet with some form of exercise. Have clear goals and start gradually. Try to choose an exercise you enjoy as you are more likely to stick with it in the long term. It may be a good idea to seek professional advice from a fitness trainer in order to develop a fitness routine.

If you make small changes to your life, you are likely to make them a habit. Avoid going on the latest fad diet and develop a lifestyle which encompasses a healthy mind as well as body.
